On Sunday 7th February the Essex League was in the balance. Orion Harriers sat one place above

Southend AC in the Chingford and new the Orion athletes knew they would have to run well in order

to hold off the challenge off Southend. But the question was, would they be able to run well

enough?

After finishing 4th and 3rd overall out of the 9 other teams competing in the Essex League the Orion

athletes knew they had to pull together if they were going to be able to get anywhere close to

winning the Essex league title. In the 3rd race Joseph Owen, who eventually went on to win the

individual Essex League title, won the race, and inspired his fellow athletes, as they finished in 2nd

place as a team . Then in the 4th Essex league race it was time for the Orion boys to run at their home

course in Chingford. Joseph Owen once again won individually with Joseph Clark, James Wood and

Jay Shotter also scoring for the team as the U15 boys, along with Saul Ashon and Will Jones, won

their first race in the league, leaving the team placed 1st in the overall leaderboard.

Then it was time for the final Essex league race and the Orion athletes , after working so hard all

season, knew that all they had to win the league was to get four runners over the finish line before

Southend. At the start of the race Joseph Owen flew off at his normal place and was once again in

first position, but the Orion athletes behind him still had work to do. The Orion and Southend

athletes had been tightly backed together in the second group of runners, but with around two

kilometres the Orion runners James Wood, Joseph Clark and Jay Shotter broke away from the

Southend athletes .Joseph, James, Joe and Jay eventually finished in 1st, 8th,9th and 10th beating the

Southend athletes in 4th, 11th,14th and 17th to win the clubs first U15 boys Essex League title for 19

years.

Congratulations to the Orion athletes Joseph Owen, Joseph Clark, James Wood, Jay Shotter, Saul

Ashon, Will Jones, Liam Brockway and Cameron Campbell who all contributed to this team’s fantastic

achievement. Also a special well done to Joseph Owen for winning the U15 boys individual Essex

League title.
