Orion XC 2009-10

Winter Handicap : 03.10.09
Well, well, well, out of the woodwork, so to speak! Dear old Geoff Lunn (65) won convincingly having
not appeared for many years as a runner of races. He raced this summer and lo and behold he did
Colin, proper!!! Colin's sure it was unintentional.
Apart from the usual ability of runners to ignore the trail marking, five D.N.F’s this time, we
mostly had a pleasant afternoon. Though... how do you get to the Wake’s Arms (City limits) from
Fairmead Bottom? You follow Danny Penfold!
Probably, not in Colin's time, all XC runners will be implanted with stop watch size mobile/ GPS
tracking devices before they are allowed out of the clubhouse (to comply with likely health and
safety regulations).

Multimob : 17.10.09 :@ 6.25 miles
A fine autumnal afternoon - dry ground, golden leaves, long shadows and little breeze in the sharp air.
A great mob showed for this match, with good battles fought at all levels.
Paul Stockings is on fine form at the moment but finished lower down than he claims he should have.
"Half the field contoured Yardley Hill while I took the correct, purist up-and-over route!" Paul
blames Danny Rose, Neil Crisp, Clare Donovan, Steve Dawkins, the marshals, The Dow-Jones, Gordon Brown
(and Jocks, in general), a bad lasagne, Global Warming and the Cat. In any order.
Though he seemed to have enjoyed his Forest outing, as he contentedly supped a beer, later.
Shay Joyce stormed round the course, having detached from a chasing Ian Clark early on, with a minute's
gap separating them from at least the Three fields, onwards. Clare Donovan led the women (and
Paul Stockings) home, impressively.
From a marshal's perspective, midway as the mulitcoloured vests flowed past, it looked like Orion might
well be overwhelmed by the massed ranks of Victoria Park, Walthamstow, Ilford, Eton Manor, Broxbourne
Runnners, Milocarians, Loughton, Springfield Striders... and so it proved in the BIG mob count, though
Orion individually held on for the 9 to score individual club match.

Amsterdam Marathon and 1/2 : 18.10.09
It was tough. Years of patient researching every race in the planet in order
to find a downhill marathon and this is all we could turn up - slightly flattish course.
Apparently the race winner got bouquets of tulips and we all got 'interesting' cakes
in the interesting, odour-filled coffee houses, where I overheard a surprisingly
unfit-looking person discussing a hash race. He missed it, because he fell asleep soon after.

A happy time was had by all...

Full marathon

Pete Spelman 3 hrs 52.19
Anne De Asha 3 hrs 57.55
Nicky Fairbridge 4 hrs 40.23

RANELAGH Mob Match : 7.81 miles : 31.10.09
Saturday saw Orion just squeak past Ranelagh in a classic mobmatch!

Richmond Park, at its Autumnal best on a warm sunny afternoon, was the backdrop
for our only away mob match this season. The optmistic mood on the nearly full
team bus was undiminished by the usual traffic jams on the North Circular. By
the start, Orion had 55 runners to Ranelagh's impressive 63 (far stronger than
the 21 they took to SLH a week earlier). Following a return of the traditional
Orion Cry, the field were off for 2 laps of the Park.

It was a classic mobmatch and too close to call for spectators, with both sides
fearing the worst. A welcome return for James Cotton, good runs from Mike
Rosbrook and many others and some strong finishing to nick a few points on
the line were just enough to seal the victory, despite some wayward navigation
from an unhappy Alan Dickin and a few others.

Again we have shown that we are the strongest of the 4 clubs in mob matches home
and away. Thanks is due to all those who gave up their afternoon to travel to
Ranelagh. It was worth it and, given how close it was, we wouldn't have upheld
Orion's now proud tradition without each of you. Thank you.

VETS INTER-CLUB : LOUGHTON : 07.11.09
Covering note from Loughton's George Richardson:
"Apologies to our visitors for the smell in the changing rooms. It arose from last
night's rain, which caused the drainage system, both in the Clubhouse and close to
the normal start, to overflow. At least we had a beautiful early November day, and
the course was not too heavy.
For those runners who were also in the Chingford League race in October, that distance
was about 5.9 miles, whereas today's race was only just over 5 miles (5.05 miles) I
was told from someone wearing a pedometer."

The free (Three) Bridges Handicap : 12:30, 2nd Wednesday, each month.
Seems like a nice race....
The course is 2.3 miles. Registration and start are by Westminster Bridge in front of St Thomas' Hospital
on Albert Embankment and it's a yachting handicap like Orion's 5 milers... The
course takes in both Vauxhall and Lambeth Bridges. It is excellent for working on your speed. There are
no roads to cross so it is very safe. But they emphasise that you run entirely at your own risk.
The race is organised by volunteers and has a long history going back about 30 years - two of the original
runners still race regularly.
And Orion furnished its winner THIS month!

Essex Vets : Chigwell : 05.12.09
There is gold in that there mud! Some brilliant pix here from Louise Vacher!
Results HERE.

At a sunny and muddy Chigwell Row, Mike Rosbrook made a winning return to the
Essex Vets Champs to win a clear gold by nearly 3 minutes in the over70s!
(we doubt that Mike's race number is his actual age...)
Despite slipping back on the second lap, the mens v40s team held on to their
silver medal place, a single point ahead of Springfield. The team included vet virgins
Tim Wright and Colin Pearson and 2 men in their last v40 season Eric Paul and Dave Brock,
supported by Quin Broadbent and Joe Happe in his first "real" (muddy) cross country race.
Injuries and withdrawals meant the v50 team was a little depleted, but we still put out 9
men and held Eton Manor off by 2 points. The team was led home byBill Bennett in 28th, with
good runs from a flu-struck Dave Milner (45th), Bob Jousiffe (9th over60), Pete Bulaitis (55th),
Steve bunce (60th), Geoff Messenger (12th Over 60),Paul Robinson (63rd), Mike Rosbrook and the
ever-present Pete Deadman (23rd over 60).
The ladies did well (unlike Loughton ladies who missed the start) with good runs
from the likes of Christine Inch (5th v45), Belinda Lewis (28th),
Mary Armitage (33rd), Hayley Barron (35th), Julie Robinson (12th v45), Kim Hudson (14th v45),
Anne de Asha (20th v45) and Karen Allworth (22nd v45) with the team finishing 5th out
of 12 teams.
Eton Manor had a good turnout in all categories, with Zoe Woodward and Gail Brannan
’medalling’ in their age categories... and EM had even stronger turnout in the evening for
the Christmas do!

Eastern Counties Cross Country Championship : 06.12.09 : Colchester
MacGregor Wins 2009 Eastern Counties Cross Country Championship - Andrews takes Silver:
OH scored a great 1-2 in the Under 17 Women's race at the Eastern Counties cross
country championships on a sunny Saturday at Hilly Fields, Essex University course in Colchester.
In form Lauren MacGregor won the title on the muddy 6K course in 23:35 and Jay Andrews broke
way from a bunch of five runners to secure the silver medal in 24:52 behind her training
partner, opening up a 9 seconds gap on bronze medal winner Sam Redgrave.
1 Lauren MacGregor Orion 23:35
2 Jay Andrews Orion 24:52
3 Samantha Redgrave Colchester & Tendring 25:01

OH Shay Joyce, still on the comeback from a bad bout of Flu, placed 7th in the
Senior Men's race at the Eastern Counties cross country championships on a sunny Saturday at
Hilly Fields, Essex University course in Colchester on 6 December. Shay covered the tough 3
lap, slushy 12K course in 40:16 and was the only OH Senior taking part! Shay felt
that on a good day, 4th place would have been achievable but overall he was satisfied based
on his recent illness disrupting his form and training. The Eastern Counties Championships
covers the Counties of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Suffolk
and Lincolnshire.

SLH Mob Match : 7.81 miles : 23.01.10
Saturday's mob match saw a welcome return to racing with 76 runners complete the
7.5 mile course in good, muddy conditions.

Orion ran out comfortable winners over visitors South London Harriers by over
300 points in the 19 to score match.
It was the 81st match against SLH, who had been the first home opposition in the
old clubhouse. Obviously they should have been our first visitors in our new
clubhouse, but everything went well at our temporary home at the cricket club
with Alan's team working their usual magic in the kitchen as well as a welcome
pint at the bar, despite absence of showers for the women.
Danny Moses and Ben Hall led the field home, followed by Danny Penfold in 4th
and Zoe Woodward 2nd lady. Joe Happe, Mark Tempest and Pete McHugh were the
final Orion scorers. It also marked a welcome return to the Wilderness for
Colin Braybrook who had been hiding in St Albans for 25 years, though it doesn't
seem to have done him any harm as he finished 5th.
This win completed another Orion hat-trick of wins. Thanks to all those (first
claim and particularly second claim) who turned out through the season to
represent Orion.

As ever the biggest thanks go to all those without whom we couldn't race, all
the marshalls, the trail-layers, the ever-reliable timekeeping team and Nigel
for doing the results.

The Southern : Parliament Hill : 9 miles
Bad luck strikes depleted Orion at the Southerns.
On a beautiful sunny, but crisp day at Parliament Hill bad luck befell a number
of Orion stars. First Georgia Tuckfield was forced to withdraw. Next in the
junior men, in-form Danny Penfold turned an ankle and had to be helped from the
course. Finally, in the senior men, Danny Moses suffered a debilitating stitch
after 6 miles and Quin Broadbent pulled up after 7 miles- while leading the
Orion team.
Andrew Warner ran strongly to be first home (just inside the first 400),
followed by Tim Wright, Mark Tempest, Bill Bennett and - a risen from his sick
bed- Pete Deadman.

Congratulations to our friends at Woodford for winning the senior women's race
and getting bronze medals in both the senior and U20 men's races.

Kev Woods took some nice, sharp pix HERE!
Mainly of OH, Dulwich Runners and of some others he knew - including Eton Manor.

RUNNING FLORIDA...
Whilst the rest of us at Orion HarrierS spent January ploughing through Snow and Mud
in sub-zero temperatures, Shay Joyce spent the month in Sunny Florida USA with parents
Dave and Maxine enjoying 70F - 80F in the USA's sunshine state and taking the opportunity
to compete on the Central Florida's East Coast in a number of local Road Races and
returned with a successful set of results and memories of another great vacation.
Shay won the Quail Valley Charity Cup 5k in the beautiful town of Vero Beach after which
Shay, Dave and Maxine were guests of the organisers for an excellent lunch in the plush
Quail Valley Country Club which has its own Golf Course, Marina, Tennis and Squash Courts
amongst other things. A great day in all.
This was followed up a week later with 2nd place in the Cape Canaveral 4 Miles race around
the Port roads. The Joyce family followed this up with a Sea Fishing Trip out of Port
Canaveral and returned with a catch of Red Snapper, Silver Snapper, Trigger Fish, Sea Bass,
Mackerel etc which was donated to the crew and very gratefully received.
Shay's final race came a week later and saw him again finish 2nd in the town of Titusville
at the Light-The-Way 5K and another great day with lots of prizes and freebies.
Returning to the UK from Florida is always a shock to the system but Shay ran 26:32 at the
Chingford League Victoria Park 5 Mile Road Race which wasn't a bad return.

SOUTHERN VETS PIX by Dave Barrett

The Orion Fifteen : 20.03.10
Saturday saw good conditions for the 56th Orion 15. The rain over the previous couple
of days had softened the surface enough to make it a classic and the drizzle in which
the race started quickly eased off. A record entry set determinedly off into the forest.

Serpentine brought a strong contingent and took away the men's winner (Eric Phillips- 1:36:06),
ladies winner (Jane Fanning1:47:40) and the men's and women's team prizes. Orion pride
was saved by Colin Braybrook (finishing 4th and picking up the first men's vets prize),
Zoe Woodward (winning the women's v45) and winning the men's vets team (Giles Hopkinson,
Dave Brock and Tim Wright).

Enormous thanks Andrew Dodd for all his work as race director in organising a very succesful
race. Big thanks also to the army of people who helped- without whom there would be no race.
Particular thanks to Bill Bennett who organised the marshalls, Quin for sorting out the trail,
Nigel for doing the results, Bob and the timekeeping team and Alan and his refreshments team.

Finally thanks to all those who ran and made it such a good day- and for your donations on
which the club relies!

A windy day and undulating course didn't make for pb's on the day but a good entry and excellent organisation, support and marshalling give the race 10/10 from a competitors point of view. Physical Shield Road Relays : 30.03.10 None of Orion Men's top guns turned out for this year's Physical Shield Relays at Loughton, on a bitterly cold night with drizzle. However Orion's Senior Women's team boosted by high flying junior's Lauren MacGregor and Jay Andrews along with Katy Brett and Mary Armitage repeated their 2009 victory.
