Blackheath and Bexley Mob Match : Down there! 20.10.12
Orion took a depleted team to Blackheath, who were able to turn out 50 runners, including a GB international,
a fitting way to mark this fixture first run in the 1912/13 season. Though outnumbered, the Orion runners
made up for it in terms of commitment around the testing 7.5 mile lap of Hayes including mud, hills and
slippery chalk trails. Blackheath's numbers told in the final result where they comfortably won.

This year also saw the introduction of the WellsColley Cup a trophy scoring the veterans only, commemorating
the memory of Orion's much missed Micky Wells and Blackheath's John Colley (also a descendant of Orion's
first Secretary Frankie Harriss), which went to Blackheath.

Particular mentions to Brian Jenkins taking the honour of leading the club back in a mob match for the
first time and Orion's ladies section in the form of an under-the-weather Melissa Timpson who put in a typically
gutsy performance justly rewarded by an enormous number of Grand Prix points.

Thanks to all those Orion members who made the journey and to our hosts Blackheath who put on a great race.
In future, we need to take as many people as possible to away matches to give us a chance of winning.

Essex Vets XC CHAMPIONSHIPS : 01.12.12
Great atmosphere and team spirit at the Essex Vets yesterday. Thanks to all the supporters.
The v50 mens team (Kev, Eric, Dave, Gerry) took gold and the v40 men (Colin, Barny, Swifty and Tim)
tied on points but lost gold, but only lost it on countback.
Great runs for Kev Julian and Eric Paul saw them take 4th and 5th, individuals.
Essex Medals For Orion at Claybury
Orion Harriers picked up two team medals at the Essex Vets Cross Country Championship at a cold
and wet Claybury on December 1st.
First up, the 10 man strong V50 mens and 6 Vet ladies raced over 8.1k 3 lap course. Running first
gave them the honour of breaking the ice in the puddles, but this clearly suited the Orion oldboys
as Kevin Julian produced a brilliant run to lead the team home in 4th, followed in by Eric Paul
in 5th, Dave Brock returning to form in 11th and Gerry Shaw coming in as the fourth counter in 19th
for a team total of 39 points and the Gold medal. Great runs from a determined Phil Hernon,
Bill Bennett, Grant Corton, Gary Bartlett, and Paul Williams, and Pete Deadman completed a great
team performance.
The ladies all ran well amongst a tough field with Chris inch 1st home in 33rd backed up by
Mary Armitage, Alison Bugg, and Hayley Baron for 12th team with great runs also from Karen Allworthy
and Captain Anne De Asha.
The V40 young’uns had high hopes of getting in amongst the medals. Following a fast start, Colin Read,
Tim Wright and Barny Foot worked together for the first 2 laps as they picked their way through the
field into the top 10, spurred on by some fantastic support all around the course. Club captain Tim,
producing his best run for 12 months, and Colin were able to push on over the final lap to finish 6th
and 7th. Barny followed in 9th, and Neil Swift continued his comeback from injury to finish 29th for
a team total of 51. This put Orion level on points with Colchester Harriers, but Colchester took the
win on count back as their 4th man finished higher up the field, leaving us with Silver by the smallest
of margins.
Giles Hopkinson just nipped home in front of Joe Happe in their private battle as both had superb runs
to finish in the top 40. Backed by Glen Gosling and Alan Goldbold they brought the B team home in
11th place.
So as a club we showed the value of strength in depth, no superstar individual medals, but two
impressive medal winning team performances. We also learnt the hard way how important every place is
you never know that 1 point may just be the difference. So far this season it has been the club
juniors providing the inspiration for the seniors to go out and perform. Perhaps those who are old
enough to know better can return the favour and show that every runner and every place count.
Danny Rose's Pix

FWIW I believe this may be the BEST EVER performance by Orion Men Vets. It's certainly
far better than I can recall from m-m-m-my g-g-g-generation,
but perhaps if someone has time to scan the Gazettes...? : The Web Guy

Essex County XC CHAMPIONSHIPS : 05.01.13
A great Team Silver for Orion on a demanding muddy course - what else?!
Racing at the Olympic Mountain Bike venue following 6 of the wettest months in history was never going
to be dry, flat and fast, but then that is what the track season is for. Even the walk from the car park
to the start was a treacherous mudslide, which gave a few of the parents a taste of the fun their
fantastic junior runners were in for as they raced for all they were worth over the toughest of cross
country courses.
The under 13 boys race was first off and Orion had a magnificent 9 runners taking on the challenge. Joe
Clark had an excellent run for his 6th place to achieve county selection, followed home by Joss Foot (13th),
Jake Ofiler (14th) and Anthony Coleman (16th), who worked well together up the hills to bring the team home
for a superb team Silver. There were also impressive runs from Jack Patterson, Will Jones, James Inch,
Daniel Wilshire and James Colman as Orion was the only club to field a B-team.
Nancy Callegher once again gave her all in the under 13 girls for 13th place, followed in by Emily Sharpe
21st and Lucy Vandum 35th. The under 15 boys race saw Orion’s only individual medallist. A superb run by
Daniel Richards to nip home in 2nd place just ahead of a Southend runner, he was followed home by Charlie
Weston continuing his improvement in 9th (and who will be on reserve list for county selection) and George
Day 15th.
Armannie Antoine-Chagar paced her race really well for17th in the under 17 Women and Buddy Green did well
for his 20th place in the U20 Men’s race.
The Senior Women were well represented with 8 runners. Claire Thurgood ran strongly throughout for 11th to
lead the team home, with Vicky Gill showing her ‘love’ for the mud in 15th. They were backed up by Christine
Inch (43rd) and Mary Armitage(55th) for 8th place.
The senior men came into this race with high hopes following some creditable Essex League performances, but
knew it would be tough without the injured Brian Jenkins and the Hall boys. Jack Stroud, Lee Bailey and
Frankie Conway packed together brilliantly to lead the team home in 13th, 14th and 15th places. Neil McGoun,
whose new spikes didn’t look new for long, had the race of his life for 22nd place and Dan Moses produced a
solid performance for 25th. Barny Foot brought the team home as 6th counter in 36th place, with Ian Clark
just behind in 37th. Woodford won the title with an impressive 79 points, but with 125 Orion won their first
ever senior cross country medals with team Silver. Even better we did it with a team where 4 of the six runners
have come up through the Orion Juniors. This is a brilliant club effort and hopefully something we can build
on in years to come.
Huge thanks go to the support on the day which helped all the runners on, especially to Jane and Clive for
their excellent organisation support and advice.
And finally a few words from the Club Captain:
Well done all. These are Orion's first senior cross country Essex medals, so the whole team takes a key place
in Orion's history. The rest of us now need to focus on making sure we consolidate second in the Essex League
next week and having another go at Woodford in the 12 to score match in the Southerns at Parliament Hill on
January 29th. Tim

South of England AA Cross Country Championships at Parliament Hill Fields: 16.02.13
by Bert Bond
It was jolly sporting of Aldershot Farnham and District AC, Vicky Gill’s former club, to invite the rest
of the south of England to their annual club championships. As usual they dominated the event.
The controversial postponement of the championships from the advertised date of 26th January to last
Saturday, only a week before the English Nationals, resulted in smaller fields than usual. The venue,
which I have known since 1952, was the muddiest ever. To avoid further damage to the football pitches
the start was moved from the rear of the lido to the tarmac path further up the hill thus slightly
shortening the course.
Our U13 boys finishing 16th out of 26, were the only team to close-in. Joe Clarke and Jake Offilier ran well
to finish merely one minute behind the winner. They received good support from James Wood101st, and Jack
Patterson 115th, James Inch 135th and Daniel Wilshire 171st out of 204 runners. 194 U15 boys finished,
including Ben Pattinson 79th, and only 17 seconds behind him George Day 93rd. Cheyenne Antoine-Chagar 94th
and Alex Chrisostomou 149th, were among the 151 U17 Men who finished.
There were encouraging performances in the U13 Girls race from Isobel Mills 48th and Nancy Clallagher 55th
only 2 seconds behind, and Emily Sharpe 83rd, out of 204. Well done too, to Madeleine Carr, Katie Inch and
Joelle Ewen, 134th, 143rd, and 168th respectively in a race totalling 187 U15 girls. Armannie Antoine-Chagar
gave all that she had in finishing 40th against older opposition in the U20 women’s event, whose 53 runners
were the fewest on the day. If we had 3 other runners and they had only finished in the last 3 positions we
would have won bronze medals! AFD A and B teams were the only ones to close-in.
For the first time in our history our seniors were led home by husband and wife. On an unusually mild day but
in conditions rapidly deteriorating underfoot after 8 races, Clare Thurgood hung on bravely in the final lap
to gain an excellent 38th place among 255 senior women. Liz Hall, much to her surprise made an impressive
debut in a top quality race in 157th place, while Pippa Dowswell, only 14 seconds adrift, was 170th, both
retaining their halfway positions. AFD, with 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th finishers, comfortably won the
four-to-score team prize.
Our Senior Men haven’t closed-in a team since 2009. Clare’s husband, Ian Clark, ran strongly to finish 160th,
while Tim Wright 254th, Mark Tempest 265th, Buddy Green, still U20, 348th and Glenn Gosling 361st out of 541
finisher, kept the Orion Flag flying (even if only at half-mast!). Next season, presumably at a different
venue, let us hope that our enthusiastic and talented youngsters and senior women can find four finishers and
our senior men six (if not twelve to challenge for the Essex Cup) to enable us to close-in teams in as many
of the 10 events as possible. And don’t forget to bring your own pins!

SLH Mob Match : 16.03.13 : 7.5 miles, Coulsdon
South London Harriers Mobmatch: So far and yet so close

Foul weather, roadworks and some wayward navigation from the coach driver (including a detour half way to
Brighton) were inauspicious omens for this match. Though, the wet weather had turned the North Downs course
into a challenging mudbath, which suited the visiting Orion runners.

The evenly matched (28 a side) match ebbed and flowed and was too close to call by eye. In the end, SLH ran
out winners 615 to 663 for their first win in 8 years.

First home was our own Harold Wyber over 20 seconds ahead of SLH's Stuart Major; a veteran with 99 mobmatch wins
to his name.

Performance of the day went to Roger Berry, whose venerable fell shoes completely disintegrated with the upper
completely separating from the sole. He finished carrying the remnants complaining that the lack of grip in his
socks had cost him a handful of places and a fall; a fine example of true harrier spirit.

The race was also the men's veterans championships, congratulations to Kevin Julian this year's over 50s champion
and Tim Wright the over 40s champion.

With double grand prix points on offer, a lot of the Divisions were wrapped up: Robert Maggio taking the second
claim; Christine Inch taking Women's Division 1, Bix Hall taking Division 4, Stuart Colley Division 3, Kevin Julian
Division 2 and Tim Wright Division 1.

All credit to Gary Bartlett having run every grand prix race this season, who declared himself disqualified, having
in the absence of any markers headed for the only runners he could see missing out part of the course.

Particular congratulations to the ever present Dave Stanley who leads the way among the current runners in mobmatch
attendance, who chalked up his 70th appearance and to Quin Broadbent just behind with 68.

Enormous thanks to all those who turned out on the day, including those battling with injuries and Melissa Timpson
as our other lady. Even with the rearranged date, 28 is a poor turnout for Orion. With a couple more runners,
we would have won.

A doughty band of athletes ignored the cold and wind; the mud, snow and hills to gallop round in fine style, trailing plumes of panting breath behind them. The race was well won by Eton Manor's Tomas Stasionis, with Orion taking the men and men Vet's team prizes, whilst Ladies Team prize was lifted by VPH + THAC. In an age of increasing softness, I was proud to help marshal the 200+ participants along this snow-blasted Classic course.
