01/03/2021 – Club Covid-19 Update

The Government roadmap allows a return to outdoor sporting activities from 29 March, though this date will not be confirmed until 22 March. Under England Athletics guidance, once the move to outdoor sport comes into force, we will be able to do the following outdoors in a COVID secure environment: train in groups of up to 12 plus a leader (slightly different coaching ratios apply to juniors) hold club only races with up to 149 participants and hold open races (the latter being subject to Government confirmation, and, if confirmed, an England Athletics licence). Informal training in groups of up to 6 will also be allowed. Social distancing rules will continue to apply at this stage of the roadmap.
This means we currently plan to return to Tuesday night hill training and Wednesday night training in a COVID secure environment from 29 March (or as soon as possible thereafter if the roadmap timetable is delayed) and to training at Walthamstow track as soon as it reopens some time in April.
We are also in discussion with the Corporation of London about obtaining permission to return to racing. The priorities for the next couple of months will be the Mercury and Juniors’ championships, finding a way to hold a combined 2020/21 version of the Orion 15 (probably in the Autumn), plus working with the Chingford League to complete the league season. Under the current version of the roadmap, it would be possible, with the Corporation’s permission, to hold the fell race, the Forest 5s and 5k on the rides more or less as normal after 21 June. Further news on the Midweek League’s plans should be available soon.
More detailed guidance on the return to training will be made available once the 29 March date is confirmed. In the meantime, keep a look out for the next round of virtual races..
